Born Free < Born Free video

"I don't wanna talk about money because I got it... I dont' wanna talk about hoochies since I been it...

M.I.A. released her fresh new comeback single, Born Free, on the world this past week from her new album due out in late june. Can't say my full opinion yet on the hard hitting song (she sounds a little too much like Karen O?) but the video that just got unleashed is absolutely insane. You may recognize the director Romaine-Gavras from his earlier video for Stress by JUSTICE. His new work for Born Free makes the originally controversial Stress video look like a fucking One Saturday Morning cartoon...
Enjoy!

>M.I.A : Born Free

Here's the video via Vimeo (YouTube pulled it from airing in the U.S.)
Make it full size, watch all 9 minutes, but beware: explicit fucking content (:

dancehall dubstar

I'm not one to feed stereotypes (that aren't deserved) but I've been meaning to do a reggae post for a minute, sue me if it should so line up so well with the anticipated holiday...

Ever since Malcolm put up Mos Dub, the thermometer hit 80 last week, and tomorrow being what it is, a reggae post seemed very fucking appropriate. Thought i'd post these tonight while you're still in a state to download these jammahz. Here are the hits...

My-Top-5-Reggae-To-Help-Celebrate-Everything-Urryday (Part 1?)

UNO:

Let's start this off right. Richie Spice. relatively new on the scene. Starts off sounding goofy as fuck but develops oh so nicely. Huuuurrrrrbbbb

>Link: Marijuana- Richie Spice

DOS:

An original classic by the legend Dennis Brown. Recently remade and released as another single from Nas & Damian Marley's collabo album coming soon. I posted the original single on this post. I prefer the original but I'll let you decide.

 >Link: Promised Land- Dennis Brown
>Link: Land Of Promise- Nas & Damian Marley

TRES:
Via the legendary Trojan label out of kingston. A BIG hit in 1977 I'm sure if it was re-released now it would be just as big. Pretty sure it's one of my Top 25 Most Played on my iTunes...

>Link: Uptown Top Ranking- Donna & Althea

CUATRO:
I have wanted to post these for a while. I originally bought this on vinyl form at a garage sale. After realizing how fucking amazing it was i searched for "The Babylon Street Gladiators" everywhere with no avail. Turns out The Gladiators was the band, Babylon Street was the album... Enjoy. 1980s reggae=gold.

>Link: Rich Man Poor Man- The Gladiators (This chorus made me cry one time when i was really tired)

>Link: Prayer To Jah- The Gladiators (If the key change in the chorus isn't a prayer to jah I don't know what is)

CINCO:
This shit puts the DANCE IN DANCEHALL. I dare you to try and not shake your ass to this shit. An all time fav.

>Link: Tour (Lil Jon & Paul's Mix)

And watch this tomorrow if you're looking to lykke totes geek the fuck out brahh.....

NEW CRYSTAL CASTLES LEAKED

Hope everyone's weekend was swell. Mine was certainly amazing. 22 days until summer. double-u tee eff..

In other news, put all other posts on hold, the new Crystal Castles album (that wasn't due until like june) got leaked over the weekend by some dude who was sent a promo cd and didn't know who they were.... Niiice. Props to my boyee timid tim for being a download slut and putting me on. If you don't know what this electronic duo is aboutt I posted some bangers back when on this post.

Here are the tracks that caught my attention but they're all pretty solid. Enjoy.

Links:
Celestica- Crystal Castles

Also just wanted to add that on wednesday night I fucking saw this shit outside my dorm window. Fucking insane. Thought we were being bombed... Minnesota vs. Wisconsin?

Malcolm's turn

El homeboyo, Malcolm aka DJ Dana Sauce aka DJ Papa Bear (where the fuck did those come from?) is giving me that weekly break once again via Colby College in Maine. If you have nothing better to do tonight (which you don't) check out his radio show streaming live at wmhb.org at 7 central 8 east. Requests are welcome as usual. But only good ones.

Lay the preview on em' falco.

UNO:
Malc: New mixtape, done by Max Tannone, the same guy who did "Jaydiohead." Some quality dub remixes of some of Mos Def's jams. And this is one of them.

>Link: History Town- Mos Dub

Patrick: Thank Jah this shit came right in time for this weather. Although History Town is the fav (love that female vocal sample), there are def a few bangers on this.
Download the whole mixtape here.

/stay tuned for my humidity-inspired-reggae-post coming this weekendd

DOS:
Malc: I like this song more and more every time I hear it. I don't know what it is about it.
It's just so... down to earth. You can relate to it. It's not preachy or anything. You can probably memorize all the lyrics in the time it takes to read the title of the song.

>Link: Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell- Das racist

Patrick: Social experiment for the weekend: play that at a party and see what happens. The whole album is definitely love it or hate it mateerial.

TRES:
Malc: I'm really feeling this song right now. Listening to it makes you feel like you're on a psychedelic journey to somewhere cool. It also really makes me want to dance, even though I would have absolutely no idea how to dance to a song like this. Maybe to robot? It's probably too smooth to robot to. Probably the moonwalk would be the best option. Youtube instructional videos, here I come.

>Link: Do The Astral Plane- Flying Lotus

Patrick: That reminds me. I've posted this before but I don't see any rules on bringing shit back for round 2... A MILLI!!

>Link: Robo Tussin ft. Lil' Wayne- Flying Lotus

(Schwick) QUATTRO:
Malc: Yes, Cee-lo was dope before Gnarls Barkley. Yes, this song ranks up with "Forest Whitaker" by Brother Ali as one of the best personal, revealing, and inspirational songs written by a fat rapper. If you ever wondered what trials and tribulations Cee-lo faces on a daily basis, just press play.

>Link: Die Trying- Cee-Lo

Patrick: Wait, what about We Thuggin' by Fat Joe?

CINCO:
Malc: If you thought R. Kelly couldn't make a song more sexual than Ignition (but less sexual than Bump N Grind), prepare to be proved wrong. I'm not sure the appropriate occasion to play this song, but let me know if you figure it out. Nobody lays the truth down like R.

>Link: Feelin' On Yo Booty (Hypnosis Mix)- R. Kelly

Patrick:  How does this one rank malcolm?

>Link: Pregnant- R. Kelly ft. Tyrese

Enjoy the tunes. Tune in tonight for the full show.

p.s. the sun may increase the thursday thirst but know your limits.

& WE OUT.

Toozday Videeoday

Wow, 2 posts in 2 days?? check me out back on my grind...

Had a little time so I thought I'd put up a few videos that have been on my radar latelyy..

Sebastien Tellier put out this video out for Record Makers 10th anniversary. Goes from being very appealing to very unappealing, highly hypnotizing nonetheless. Great animaciĆ³n. Great song.

Record Makers Promo from CreativeApplications.Net on Vimeo.

My brother showed me this trailer when I was at home. Shook things up at Cannes. Directed by Jacques Audiard, this film looks absolutely sick, can't wait. (I like this trailer better but the youtube sizing gets fucked).

A PROPHET - UK Trailer from PPC Film on Vimeo.

And this shit pretty much blew ma mindd...

Skateboardanimation from Tilles Singer on Vimeo.

AND IN OTHER NEWS...

LINEUP ANNOUNCED:
Retribution Gospel Choir
OK Go
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
MGMT

Looks to be good. Def better than last year. Good thing I already got free tickets on lockk mo fuckas. To be honest I am almost more excited for Sharon Jones than I am MGMT (who I heard were shitty live).

If you're unfamiliar with Sharon Jones check out Better Things, and This Land Is Your Land. (I can't post them because I bought em on itunes. Best brass section in the game.

I posted MGMT's Flash Delirium a while ago to download from their new album. A nonsensical track accompanied with a nonsensical-er video... (Sorry about the weird sizing don't know how to fix that)

Now I am going to do laundry..
Summer so close my manks can taste it..

Stones Throw

My apologies for the continued lack of posts. As I said before, up until thursday at 11am last week I was getting academically rapedd. And then proceeding to solely heal the wounds with proficient celebration...

Anyways, let's get into it.

MY-STONES-THROW-POST

The LA label Stones Throw (founded by Peanut Butter Wolf) has been doing their fucking thaang since '96. From Dilla, Doom, Madlib, Guilty Simpson, and Oh No to Mayer Hawthorne, James Pants and Dam-Funk, Stones Throw easily has been and still is one of the most influential and diverse labels in the game. And supplied me with so many bangersss

 ALOE BLACC
This dude has been on the scene for a while but he hit gold with his recent hit I Need A Dollar. Sounds like it could have been made in '73 it was picked up for the theme song of HBO's show How To Make It In America. This shit will stay in your head for days.  SO DOPE.
>Link: I Need A Dollar- Aloe Blacc

And of course, here's a hip hop version (it was only a matter of time) of I Need A Dollar this dude named Marky did with it if that's your preference. Why it's called rasta monsta i have no clue.
>Link: RASTA MONSTA- Marky

MAYER HAWTHORNE
I think my boyee Evan originally put me on to this dude with his hit, Just Ain't Gonna Work Out. Another song that will stay in your head for days and sounds like it's from the seventies. Dude's got a killer voice, he sounds like a black soul singer. But he's instead a shrimpy white dude.

Play this for your significant other right before you change your fb relationship status.......
>Link: Just Ain't Gonna Work Out- Mayer Hawthorne

And here's a cover he did of Stones Throw artist James Pants' song Thin Moon. I like this version better though.. shhh... chilll buzzzz
>Link: Thin Moon- Mayer Hawthorne

THE ROOTS PAY RESPECT TO DILLA
Firstly, if for some reason you don't know who Dilla I suggest you get on your mo fucking wikipedia game asap as possible. In a great act of musicianship, The Roots payed tribute to the late producer with the Dilla-Joints Mixtape covering some of his greatest hits. If you like this check out stones throw's Yesterday's News Quintet.

And thank god I got this shit last week when I did, these low key jams make great study music.

>Link: Hall & Oates- The Roots
>Link: Make Em NV- The Roots
>Link: Look Into Her Eyes- The Roots

AND SOME CLASSICS THAT THIS POST COULD JUST NOT BE COMPLETE WITHOUT.......

The mighty ranks of the Stones Throw producers got behind the beastly Detroit MC Guilty Simpson a few years ago for his debut album, Ode To the Ghetto. Copped this shit in New York. Great buy.

>Link: Run (ft. Sean P and Black Milk)- Guilty Simpson

>Link: T. Biggums- Oh No (Nostalgia: 16 years old. Soccer trip to Sweden. This was our theme song. Amazing)
>Link: Devotion- Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf (This is a classic via '92. RIP Charizma)

And a couple from the legendary Madlib's original trio of dopeness Lootpack--
>Link: Whenimondamic- Lootpack
>Link: Weededed- Lootpack

And if for some god known reason you don't have these...............
>Link: The Red- Jaylib (still such an epic hook)
>Link: Low Class Conspiracy- Quasimoto (the modern day Fuck The Police)

HOLY SHIT THAT TOOK TOO LONG I HAVE SHIT TO DO FUCK

/Enjoy.
/More very soon.
/Can't wait for this.....
/let me quote a girl evan met over the weekend: "i just don't want to work at KFC for the rest of my life..." I feel your struggle homegirl.

THE POST YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR......

Welcome to the 2nd post in the blog-comeback-onslaught...
(the previous post obviously didn't count......)

FIRST AND FOREMOST:
The homeboy DJ Zane is rocking the dance party of the weekend, tonight at the Radisson main room in dinkytown. Just went with him to rent some super-psychadelic-kRaZy lights for us kids to trip out to. Yay.

Good stupid FREE top-40 fun. Put your crunkface on and do it up, it's about to be big big big. Jerk battle me.

Dear Zane, If I had one request for a non-disco song (that hasn't been posted yet)(besides you're a jerk, obvi) please play this song. Soon to blow up it's the new Cataracs joint with none other than the hyphy prince, E-40. After all, it's not a dance party without E-40 somewhere in the mix... This shit bangs.

>Link: Club Love Remix (ft. E-40)- The Cataracs

Actually... I might have just been inspired.... to do a post I have waited a long time to do.... yes.. i think it's about time I unleash.... possibly controversial...

MY-TOP-5-HYPHY-SONGS-TO-WHICH-YOU-WILL-GO-DUMB-TO (PART-1)

If you don't know about the hyphy movement in the bay...... if you've never gone hecka dumb at a sideshow on a thizz.... then let's get you going kiddo. Call me a hyphy scholar. Play any of these at your party and it's game over.
First session of Professor Thizzberg's Anthropology of Da Bay 101. Let's begin the tutorial.

The aren't even part of the list. These are just givens.
The Hyphy Prophet himself... Mac Dre. With the anthem. I remember when Charley got Mac Dre confused with Mac Lethal and I almost murdered him.
>Link: Thizzle Dance- Mac Dre

I'll never forget when they let this shit bang at Central dances. So fucking dumb. Or when we blew up the lunch room with this shit.... The sickest remix I have ever heard. Ever. "Jesus had dread so shake them".
>Link:Tell Me When To Go (Trackademics remix)- E-40

And the others...

1.) This song unleashes a beast in me. If you don't have your shit plugged into a sub though.. don't bother.
>Link: Bottles Up- The Team

2.)  A hyphy hierarchy would go something like this...
God: Mac Dre.
King: E-40 (maybe Too $hort..)
Prince: Keak da Sneak (he did after all invent the term "hyphy"). Hella stupid

>Link: Super Hyphy- Keak Da Sneak (produced by Traxamillion)
>Link: N Fronta Yo Momma House- Keak Da Sneak
(had to add the 2nd one in too because it's so dope even though it's more of a g-funk beat)
"Hey, as long as Keak's happy, I'm happy" --Isaac Lunde.

3.) Had to do it. A classic. Traxamillion struck gold with this shiiiii. And what a rat pack to assist.
>Link: Sideshow- Traxamillion ft. Too Short And Mistah FAB

4.) Oh my dear Yukmouth and crew, thank you so much for the warm welcome.
>Link: Welcome 2 Da Bay- Yukmouth

5.) Smooth stupid dumb and bouncy. Aye Aye. Straight outta East Side Oakland, the debatable hyphy mecca. I still don't know where the fuck this dude got his name from but I bet he rocks a mean turf dance...
>Link: Turfs Up- Beeda Weeda

And I have to add this in too. Our Twin Cities attempt at a hyphy rap group was known as The Lurp Mob via the Lex-Ham hood. This was our anthem. My dream of doing a show was never fulfilled. But maybe some day. Made this shit in my basement a minute ago with a synth ans a Mistah FAB sample... Disregard the dialogue at the end. I'll post the other track with all of us rapping next time. Possibly.
NEW LINK: Rep Lex-Ham- LURP MOB

And I hope this fills in any spots I missed...

And with that playlist, I hope you all have a thizztastic Friday night. Hope to see you tonight at the show IT'S GOINGG DOWWWWNNN...

BACK-FROM-DEATH

Despite what you might have thought, I am not dead and this blog is very much still aliveee. As the last post might have suggested, I have fallen off the face of the blogosphere mainly due to the influx of warm weather. But a lot has happened since the last post that has contributed to this hiatus...

Warm weather was enjoyed. I went to a dope RJD2 show. Then St. Patrick's day happened. Thizz happened. Then it snowed. Then it melted. MGMT's album got leaked. I got a job working for the equivalent of the C-SPAN of Madison as a camera guy (sounds as uninteresting as it is). Then Connor Zane and Malc visited the Madtown aka Bradtown aka Chadison.... Ruckus obviously ensued. Then tests and papers. Then I came home and relaxed wit ma boooo. Tim Hill's bbq. Grabbed jays and went to Cream night club (an experience, to say the least). Then I went to lake Superior with familia. And now I'm back with 4/5 of my break done and impending 2 mid terms and papers waiting for me when i get back. Fuck.

BUUT you don't care about any of that. You just want music. So now I'm going to whip out a few posts in the next couple days before my imminent academic rape in the upcoming week. Ready the KY.

Blog hiatus endssss..... Now.

1st post in the blog comeback onslaught:

MY-TOP-5-SAMPLES SAMPLES FUN TIME

I've wanted to do this for a while. These are fun. See how the producers chopped shit up and added what drums. Beware.. these are not considered remixes......

1.) Maybe if you've heard this shit maybe not. So fucking dope. Both versions. Madcon, the Norwegian duo (duo?) blew up with this a while ago pretty much  just put up a beat under the original Franki Valli version and added a rap. Didn't even change the name. Beware, this shit gets in your headd.

>Link: Beggin'- Frankie Valli & The 4 Seasons
>Link: Beggin'- Madcon

2.) I posted this original by Isaac Hayes in the funk/soul post from a while ago. Never knew who sampled that shit until recently. Why the Geto Boys didn't use Isaac's horns in the original is beyond me. However, both are gems.

>Link: Hung Up On My Baby- Isaac Hayes
>Link: My Mind Playin' Tricks on Me- Geto Boys

3.) This was a good find. But go through any Curtis Mayfield or Al Green album and you're bound to find a sample or two. Flips this track so well. Young Jeezus Christ Super Star + 2 words: The. Cannon.

>Link: Man Oh Man- Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions
>Link: Go Crazy (remix)- Fat Joe, Jay-Z & Young Jeezy

4.) I first recognized this spinning on its original crispy vinyl version. Beautiful. Speed up the intro, add a little drums and voila, call me Ant. Off my fav atmosphere album. You may recognize The O'Jays from their Backstabbers song also from the funk/soul post a while ago.

>Link: Who Am I- The O'Jays
>Link: Little Man- Atmosphere

5.) This last one needs no explanation. You'll recognize it right away. Sing it, Freddie.
>Link: Got What I Need (You)- Freddie Scott

Also just wanted to post this because it's just really fucking cute. Yay health insurance reform (:

AIGHTT DON'T SLEEP MO' FUCKAS MORE MORE SHIIIT COMING VURRY VURRY SOON.........
